Ommelanderzeedijk (Netherlands)

Sand was being washed out of the dike during extremely high water at various points along the Ommelanderzeedijk at Delfzijl. An investigation identified the cause. During an earlier dike reinforcement, the core of the old clay dike had been left standing, resulting in extra high water levels in the sandy part of the dike. The water pressure was so high that the dike failed its inspection.

In 2012, the DMC was installed in the Ommelanderzeedijk, initially along two 150-metre stretches. The DMC reduced the water pressure and now keeps this under control.
